Software Engineer Manager




The functional manager for Software Engineering lead a staff of Software Engineers in the design, development, delivery and maintenance of medical device software. This is a key leadership role, sharing leadership responsibilities across a global staff of Software Engineering withing the Enabling Technologies Operating Unit of Medtronic. This position has the responsibility and authority to provide functional guidance and leadership for management of software development, including technologies, methodologies, and use of industry best practices. Must be familiar with current software development standards and principles. This is a hands-on management position responsible for leadership and oversight of software engineers.

A Day in the Life

  • Partners with cross functional groups in collaboration of all product development initiatives
  • Recruit, hire, and onboard talent
  • Responsible for the continuous career advancement of the reporting staff
  • Responsible for recruiting and leading 3rd party, contractor resources as necessary
  • Lead and mentor a software engineering staff to achieve strong organizational performance, grow and manage individual talent, and advance our technology strategy.
  • Grow process maturity and establish quality metrics in conjunction with R&D management to meet customer expectations, reliability and system performance.
  • Analyze, diagnose, and resolve customer problem reports, working closely with product support.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Plans, directs and implements many aspects of the company's design and development of new and on-market medical device products.
  • May develop, evaluate, implement and maintain technical quality assurance and control systems.
  • May establish software reliability mechanisms and standards for company products.
  • Oversees the investigation and evaluation of existing technologies.
  • Guides the conceptualization of new methodologies, materials, machines, processes and/or products.
  • Leads the development of new concepts from initial design to market release.
  • Manages feasibility studies of the design to determine if capable of functioning as intended.
  • Monitors and supports the delivery of documentation throughout all phases of research and development.
  • Organizes the coordination of activities with outside suppliers and consultants to ensure timely delivery.
  • Selects, develops and evaluates personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the function.
  • A key responsibility of roles in this career stream is managing people. which includes: accountability for mentoring, developing and coaching staff on meeting/exceeding performance expectations and defined objectives, providing leadership to staff ensuring the prioritization of strategic and department level initiatives to include defining performance goals and targets, conducting performance reviews, and staff 1:1s to guide performance management and employee development efforts and manage toward departmental goals.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in a technically required field
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience

Nice to Have

  • Requires practical knowledge in leading and managing the execution of processes, projects and tactics within Software Engineering
  • 5 plus years’ experience as a people manager
  • Strong organization acumen with the ability to communicate effectively to non-technical audiences
  • Deep expertise in software test methodologies, quality standards/metrics (e.g. IEC 62304)
  • Experience with APIs and data platforms
  • Experience in a regulated environment
  • Proven track record as a successful software engineer
